chandra4Will it be fourth time lucky for the Planeswalker Chandra. Her original version was quite good. The third was strong. The less said about the second the better. The fourth is… interesting. Chandra, Pyromaster costs four mana to cast, two of which must be red. She enters the battlefield with four loyalty counters and has three abilities.

The first of her abilities is a straight upgrade of her original first ability. Add a loyalty counter to deal 1 points of damage to a creature and one to that creature’s controller. Nice. A good way of getting rid of pesky one-toughness creatures, and deal a sneaky damage to a player in the process.

The second ability is my favourite and has a zero cost, so it neither adds nor removes a loyalty counter to use. You exile the top card of your library and may play it this turn. So if it’s a land you can play (as long as you have not already played a land this turn. If it’s a spell you may cast it, as long as you have the mana to do so. It is as close as red gets to card drawn, I’ll take it.

The final ability costs 7 loyalty counters, and you exile the top ten cards of your library. Of those cards, you choose one instant or sorcery and copy it three times, then cast the copies without paying their mana cost.

Chandra, Pyromaster is a planeswalker that demands to be built around. With the right collection of instants and sorceries this planeswalker should be a force to be reckoned with.

Verdict: Marginal. This verdict may change over time, but right now this card is yet to prove itself at the multiplayer table.
