Venser journeys to Mirrodin with Koth and Elspeth to fight the emerging Phyrexian menace. Originally printed as a blue Legendary Creature, Venser returns this time as a Planeswalker.

Venser costs five mana to cast, including one white and one blue mana. His abilities fit well into what a blue/white deck is usually trying to achieve, making this a useful Planeswalker. Venser enters the battlefield with three loyalty counters and has three abilities.

Three loyalty is a bit low for a five mana Planeswalker, but this is compensated for by Venser’s first ability, which adds two loyalty counters. This ability exiles a permanent you own and then returns it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step. The uses for this ability are as many as you can think of. Exile a creature with a cool enters the battlefield ability. Exile a permanent you own that another player has since gained control of, it will come back under your control. Exile a tapped land to get it back untapped to use in your opponents turns. These are just some of the potential actions you can take.

Venser’s second ability is more straightforward. It makes all creatures unblockable this turn. Great for forcing through the damage you need to take a player out of the game. This costs just one loyalty counter.

The final ability grants you an emblem. This emblem allows you to exile a permanent each time you cast a spell. Any deck built around Venser, the Sojourner will be sure to pack lots of cheap spells in order to make the most of this ability. Use it at the right time, and you will control the table until the game ends.

Verdict: Strong. A deck based around Venser, the Sojurner will do well at the multiplayer table, and the card can also be used to strengthen other blue and white decks.
